Synopsis
We expressed interest in a Farmington town dog park to the Town in the June 2011. The response was favorable and so since then the Town has guided our group as to the necessary steps. We created and submitted a proposal to the Town Council for approval to proceed. Upon approval, we requested that the Town provide possible dog park locations (December, 2011).
The Town presented our group with three locations. A committee was formed to determine which location to pursue. The decision was the Westwood's site, which is the parcel behind the Stonehouse building (offices for the Farmington Parks and Recreation).
Soon after, in May 2012, the MDC (Metropolitan District) suggested the possibility of a dog park at their West Hartford Reservoir location. Since the site was technically on Farmington land, the towns of Farmington and West Hartford encouraged us to pursue a regional dog park. Our town requested we put the Westwood's location on hold. The MDC Board of Directors voted to reject the dog park in May 2013. We can now return our attention to Westwood's.
On June 7, 2013, a few of our FDPC members met with Town Officials at the possible Westwood’s site. We walked the property and discussed the possible layout and parking. We also discussed the next steps. The first of which was to present the site, informally, to the Town Council at their June meeting. Edie and Jen went to the meeting and the response was again positive.
The next step was to informally present to the Town Planning and Zoning Committee, which we did at their September 30th meeting. Our group is still doing research in response to the TPZ Committee’s questions, as well as concerns by adjacent property owners. We are also exploring potential alternative locations with the Town.
Our group is also in the process of formalizing ourselves, with elections of a Board of Directors and Committee Chairpersons (see below).
